Emma Watson in Burberry (S and E)

Chloe Sevigny in Proenza Schouler (S)

The Met (Costume Institute) Gala happened in New York City on May 3, 2010. It’s an event full of dramatic and theatrical outfits, though some look like a senior prom gone horribly, horribly wrong, most look excellent and fit well into the theme of the event. Here are some of S and E’s picks:
E: I love Burberry, for the most part, and this is no exception. I like how the dress is constructed asymmetrically to match the one-shouldered aspect. Also, white dresses for spring are amazing! The shoes do the job but I feel like something less complex was in order.
S: Emma, oh Emma! She really has grown well and her taste in fashion is awesome! I really like this, burberry scarves sale, the white is subtle and chic for the spring season and totally stands out from the crowd. The one-shoulder is right on trend and the paneling that has been done on her chest and hips add emphasis and move your eye about this piece. The slit going up there was risky but I like it, it adds drama to the outfit and her selection is footwear is pretty. I’m glad she didn’t go with a super dramatic shoe which might have over-powered the dramatic dress.
E: Where can I start I really like the shoes. They have a ballet feel to them and I’m really into the ballerina look right now. The dress, though, I hate. It reminds me of the net curtains that my nan has if they were dyed hipster turquoise. The cut isn’t very good, though I do like the shape of the skirt. Verdict: Fix the neck, change the colour to something softer and maybe I’ll like it.
S: The dress itself is interesting, the colour, so fresh. So much more interesting than the black on nude. However, I did not need to see your bra under there, we know you wear one like everyone else, no need to publicize it. Footwear….um yeah I’m not liking it. It seems like a spin-off on the clogs and I don’t like the clogs at all. The cut of this dress reminds me of a school girl, wish she had done better with her hair and face. I’m sure Mary Kate can tell you how to do it properly.
E: Full confession: I love Thandie Newton. She reminds me of my friend’s mum when I was little. Very elegant and fashionable without any effort. She looks confident and elegant in this dress. The dress itself, for me, is mediocre at best. I like the purple and the sculptural element but the whole thing is just meh. I do like how she paired it with the green jewelery. Very fab for a costume institute gala!
S: I like this. The colour is so rich and the interesting texture really make the dress a dramatic one. Would have liked to see more statement jewelry or none at all though. This dress screams regal!
E: I like the dress. The gold goes so well with her skin tone! It’s so regal and elegant… until you get to the bust. What is this Vegas The detailing is very show-girl but it doesn’t suit the dress or the event. Apart from that, it’s a beautiful dress.
S: This dress is amazing on her, discount burberry scarf, but wished Cavalli had skipped on the feathers on the bust line. I agree E, this is not where this sort of detail belongs. Otherwise, very nice and it shows off her curves to the T.
E: I like the pair together because they complement each other very nicely. I adore Liu Wen’s shoes. Very glamourous but tough at the same time. I like the idea of Constance Jablonski’s dress but the neck part (the sheer fabric) isn’t really my thing. I’d prefer it solid. I also really like her earrings.
S: Talk about pretty little things! I really like the geometric shapes going on Liu’s dress and her booties! Oh her booties! Constance’s dress is interesting, but I agree with E, sheer is kinda weird there. Better to go with opaque fabric.
E: What I like about Gwen Stefani’s dress is that it reminds me of the time I went to a rave last february (February 2009! Jeez!) wrapped completely in plastic wrap. I like the interplay of the chemical and the natural in this outfit. The off the shoulder part looks like a flowing waterfall, but the rest looks like plastic wrap (elegant plastic wrap, I swear). Notes on her consort: The bowtie is too large, but his suit is quite well-cut.
S: I sort of like this. It’s an interplay between sheer and more sheerness, which is totally on trend right now! Although I like the contrast, black against her skin and the skin-tone gown, I wonder why am I able to see her underwear. Otherwise, it’s very pretty. If only she would try another lip colour. And yes E, his bow tie is kinda scary.
E: The thing to note about Anne Hathaway is that she dresses the same at every evening event. The same sort of poofy light-coloured Valentino (or similar) dress, the same hair, the same make up. I love it because it’s princessey and elegant, but I want to see her try something different!
S: Oh Anne Hathaway. She really is a pretty girl, but I wonder why she won’t take more fashion risks Or try something new! I agree E, although she looks amazing, I would like to see something more from her. The cut of this dress is nice, and the shine is very well placed. A beautiful gown no less, however, her hair is such a downer. If she had done a full head of curls, burberry scarf sale, maybe that would have given this look something completely different. Or a statement necklace. Something!!!
E: To be honest, I don’t even know who this person is (does it matter though). But I love her look! I like her half shaved head and her crazy Versace dress. She oozes confidence. Though to be honest, the look becomes inaccessible and sort of inauthentic because of it; I’m sure the same thing could be achieved with affordable clothing, but this is the Met Gala so I suppose one has to wear Versace.
S: Oh E, I know who Cassie is and this is very different from where she was a few years ago. Going from hip-hop princess to almost a follower of Rihanna’s bold looks I like the cuts and the drama they create.
E: I’m on the fence about this one. At one point, I really like it. But when I look at it, more and more I feel like there’s something wrong with it that I can’t quite point out. Could it be the brightness of the shoes (why do I want to focus on her feet rather than the rest of her) or the strange hem of the dress (it’s actually quite charming) I really like how it opens up at the side and hope that there could be some photos of the back. All in all, I would totally want this dress.
S: Cut outs, cut outs, cut outs! I don’t know about this one. Although those are pretty shoes, I feel if she had gone with something more bold and harsh it would have been better, especially to contrast it with the delicate creme fabric. I don’t really like it though. The hems starting at the top and coming down, it reminds me of theatre curtains really.
E: I love this dress. She looks so elegant and refined without showing too much skin. I like the little slit at the chest and the little peep toe of her shoe peering out from the bottom of the dress. I like its trail too. It’s very elegant. What I don’t like is her makeup. It’s too dark and gothic! She should have chosen black eyes or plum lips, not black eyes and plum lips. I like her hair up also.
S: Iman looks classic. This is what I would say is the standard for attending a gala or so, and of course Prada does not disappoint. However, this does somewhat feel like a stock-standard gown. The detail on the neck line is nice, but I would have liked to see more colour, like a bright clutch for example I agree with you on the make-up E,burberry scarves, focus should have been on either the eyes or lips.
E: Basically the only reason I chose this was because of the trail. She looks like she’s emerging from the sea. That and the colours remind me of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, one of my favourite paintings of all time:
S: This reminds me of the Elle Saab gown that Rachel McAdams wore to the Oscars. The trail does look like water. Other than that, I really don’t like the bubble hem detail, reminds me a prom dress really.
